DeVlieg Taylor Ranch Field Station
Undergraduate Research Scholar Award
The DeVlieg Undergraduate Scholar award
provides funding for an "inquiry-based" learning experience for University of Idaho undergraduate students at Taylor Ranch Field Station. The program was designed to provide an opportunity for outstanding undergraduates to design a research proposal on a topic of their choosing, develop and test hypotheses in the field, write a scientific report of their research findings, and publish and/or present their research. Students work with a faculty advisor and Taylor Ranch Managers/Scientists.
The research program began in the summer of 2001 and has included various research projects, such as; a survey of amphibians of Big Creek, a study of blue grouse habituation to humans, a study of bighorn sheep lamb survival, bat surveys, a survey for Lewis' woodpecker and use of hyperspectral imagery to identify woodpecker nesting habitat in cottonwood trees, a study of marmot distribution, a survey of fly fisherman along Big Creek, and a survey of American Marten and Fisher.
The DeVlieg Foundation has an interest in helping students prepare for a career in natural resources, research and management. The Foundation is particularly interested in providing an opportunity for students to perform research in a wilderness setting. Read "Who is the DeVlieg Foundation"
