Factors that influence space use,
productivity, and survival of
black-footed ferrets and badgers
 in South Dakota

                           Shaun Grassel

Major Professor:  Dr. Janet Rachlow

Project Description

My research focuses on factors that influence population demographics of black-footed ferrets.  I am examining how territorial behaviors affect space use by ferrets, and also how the presence of badgers, a terrestrial carnivore that occupies a similar niche, affects space use by ferrets.  In addition, I am studying how habitat quality and quantity, in terms of the abundance and availability of prey, affect ferret productivity.  This research will help evaluate existing management plans and develop new strategies for conservation of black-footed ferrets.
