The Wood Construction and Design
If you are interested a career in the design and construction of residential and light commercial construction industry, then this program is for you. The curriculum provides the architectural training and business technology for supervisory and managerial positions in the construction industry. Coursework includes architectural design, building technology, site design, wood structure and identification, and other skills needed to be successful in these well-paying careers.
Job opportunities are outstanding - students tailor their individual program to a variety of career tracks. Some specific jobs held by recent graduates include design positions in the log home and prefabricated building (modular homes, office, etc.) industry. Others have accepted positions in the prefabricated roof and floor truss industry as truss designers. Another area of placement has been in engineered wood products, both in manufacturing (quality control, technical assistance) and sales. There are currently have more employment opportunities than there are graduates to fill them. Entry level salaries range from $35,000 to over $45,000 per year.
Internships and summer jobs are available for students majoring in Wood Construction and Design. Positions may be in log home design, residential construction, manufacturing of engineered lumber, doors, windows and roof trusses. These opportunities are offered by well-known wood products companies such as BMC West, Jeld-Wen, Precision Craft Log Homes and many others.
The department provides scholarships for students who demonstrate a desire to learn and show promise of successfully completing their educational training in this program. The University of Idaho and the College of Natural Resources also have scholarships available for students who file their FAFSA information and show good academic standing and/or financial need.
Many of the students are members in the UI student chapter of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Club activities include community projects, home show competitions, and guest lecturers who are invited to share their expertise and views on the trends and outlook for the building industry.
