ISIL Analyses

We provide precise and accurate data from the stable isotopic analyses of plant and animal tissue for d13C and d15N, at natural abundance or micro enrichment levels for tracer studies. Elemental percent composition is also obtained along with isotopic data. Isotopic enrichment studies should be carefully considered in order to not exceed the capabilities of our IRMS instrumentation. Macro-level enrichment normally requires only traditional mass spectrometry, not the isotope-ratio MS.

d13C for air samples and plant/soil respired CO2 are available using the GasBench II and PAL autosampler.

d18O for water samples is achieved by using the classical headspace-equilibration technique, which is automated by the GasBench II and GC PAL.  D/H is determined at best precision via direct injection onto Chromium via the H-device using the dual-inlet.

d18O and d2H (D/H) of wood cellulose, organic or inorganic solids will be implemented by high-temp pyrolysis/IRMS using the new TC/EA, referenced to a CO standard gas.

High precision d15N measurements of NO3-N from contaminated groundwater samples (see Publications) are made using a novel exchange-resin extraction method developed by the USGS and modified here at ISIL.
