ISIL Instrumentation
We routinely perform continuous-flow stable isotopic analyses utilizing the Finnigan-MAT, Delta+ isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) in tandem with several peripheral sample introduction systems. Solids are flash-combusted using CE Instrument's NC 2500 elemental analyzer (EA), interfaced through the Conflo II.
In spring 2003, we added the GasBench II, which automates all gas analyses resulting in a five-fold reduction of analysis time.
In 2004, we upgraded our facility with the addition of a Delta XP IRMS and TC/EA, which facilitates automated, continuous-flow, and high-temp pyrolysis for D/H (deuterium) and 18O. The GasBench II was moved to the XP while an H-device was added to the Delta+ for high-precision D/H, sharing time with the EA.
As studies of water use efficiency have increased, stable isotope analyses have become more critical and widespread within forest ecosystems and other biogeochemical systems research. The availability of these advanced "on-line" technologies greatly shortens analysis time and costs over traditional duel-inlet/vacuum-line work, which utilize techniques where the combustion, trapping and purification must be done manually for each individual sample prior to isotope analysis.
Our instrumental precision and international referencing accuracy meets current industry standards. This combination of instrumentation and capabilities are unique within the state of Idaho.
