Non-degree Students

This category is for applicants who wish to enroll in courses pertaining to their personal interest and who have not been admitted into a degree-seeking program.
Nondegree students must submit a change of curriculum form (PDF)to the Registrar's Office to declare the certificate program.
Why choose nondegree?
All Non-degree seeking students must follow undergraduate application procedures. Please read the important information below and then click on the Registration link to the left and follow Steps 1-2.
A person admitted as a non-degree student who wants to take undergraduate courses must be (1) a high school graduate or have completed the GED; (2) understand that acceptance in this category does not constitute acceptance into a degree-granting program; (3) have sufficient educational background to qualify for the course or courses in which enrollment is sought; (4) accept personal responsibility for the applicability of credits earned while registered in the category; and (5) understand that students in this non-degree category cannot be considered for federal or state financial aid.
A person admitted as a non-degree student who wants to take graduate-level courses must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of 2.80 or higher. Strict limitations exist for use of non-degree credits toward a graduate degree. Please refer to the UI College of Graduate Studies, Colleges and Related Units, Part 4. Scroll to page 3, General Requirements for Master's Degrees, and read the second paragraph "Transfer, Correspondence Study, Nondegree Credit and Over-aged Credit Limitation.
Please Note: A non-degree student may register for no more than 7 credits each semester and may complete a maximum of 32 semester credits at UI.
Upon completion of 32 semester credits, the student must either be admitted as a degree-seeking student at UI or submit a letter of appeal to continue as a non-degree student. Nondegree students are not eligible to receive federal Title IV financial aid, and must obtain permission from the instructor to enroll in courses numbered 500-600. See the UI General Catalog, Part 2, for details.
Any deviations from the admission policy or credit limits need the approval of the director of undergraduate admissions and/or the Admissions Committee. Instructor permission is required to enroll in courses numbered 500-600. Permission of the dean of the College of Law is required to enroll in courses numbered 800-899.
Important Certificate Information Up to 12 approved credits taken as a non-degree seeking student may be transferred into a M.S. or Ph.D. program in the College of Natural Resources with permission of the departmental graduate committee.
Students who are considering transferring non-degree credits into a CNR graduate program should request early advising from the appropriate department.
CNR Departments
Restoration Ecology Certificate students may seek nondegree admission for some of the following reasons:

To pursue studies for personal or professional advancement, and not work toward a graduate degree at the University of Idaho.

To audit a class. Auditing a course consists of attendance without participation or credit. Audited courses are not recorded on a student's permanent record if the student registers with audit status originally. Changing to audit status later in the semester will result in a grade of "WA" (withdraw to audit) status. Fees to audit a class are the same as fees for a credit class.

To transfer UI credit to another university; it is the student's responsibility to determine that UI credits will be accepted by that institution.

To fulfill a prerequisite or deficiency requirement prior to seeking admission to a graduate degree program. Restoration Ecology students who originally register for the 400-level course with nondegree status, and are later accepted into a graduate program, will be billed additional graduate fees if and when the classes appear on their study plans. |
