2009 Bleak Interns - Janette Rounds, Ecology & Conservation Biology; Ryan Blackadar, Biology; and, Jacob Johnson, Wildlife Resources. "Hands on field research, ecological monitoring, and wilderness skills" taught by Holly Akenson and Jim Akenson, TWRS Scientists
2009 DeVlieg Undergraduate Research Scholar
Kristen Pilcher, University of Idaho
Her research proposal is titled "Influence of flow and temperature regimes in Big Creek, Idaho on the seaward migration of juvenile Chinook salmon, a comparative analysis across 3 years and multiple sites within the Salmon River." Advisor: UI Brian Kennedy, Asst. Professor Fishery Resources.
Liam Junk, Idaho State University
His reserach proposal is titled "Continuing Records of Suspended Sediment Flux in lower Big Creek drainage. Are fire induced changes recognizable?" Advisor: ISU Ben Crosby, Dept of Geoscience, College of Arts and Science.
McCall-Donnelly High School - Debbie Fereday teacher brought her Environmental Science class to Taylor Wilderness Research Station May 17-18 for 2 days of streams, wildlife, plants, and wilderness field activities coordinated with Holly and Jim Akenson.
2009 Big Creek Fish Screw Trap - The anadromous fish smolt trap "screw trap" was deployed in Big Creek in early March and will operate until November. The installation and operation of this instrument is a collaboration between Idaho Department of Fish and Game and Taylor Wilderness Research Station to provide data for research and monitoring of anadromous fish migration timing and numbers in a wilderness environment over 700 miles from the ocean, and to create educational opportunities for students to participate in hands-on field experiences. This year Kiira Siitari is the IDFG fisheries technician responsible for day-to-day trap operations, fish capture and PIT tagging, and data management. Undergraduate researcher Kristen Pilcher will incorporate data from the screw trap into her fisheries research project.
In 2008 8,775 fish were captured in the screw trap, including 3,957 juvenile Chinook salmon and 1,774 juvenile steelhead trout. For additional information from 2007 and 2008 see the 2008 Big Creek Fish Screw Trap Summary page.
A New MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) - An MOU was developed between TWRS/UI, Payette National Forest, and Rocky Mountain Research Station/USFS to encourage research collaborations and information sharing on wilderness research needs, to connect TWRS to the Experiment Stations network, and to define the working relationship between Payette National Forest and TWRS. Jim Gosz coordinated the University of Idaho contributions.
