How does the on-line program work?
A student is required to take 18 of the 30 credits from the University of Idaho. Twelve credits may be taken from other universities or colleges. A student works closely with a faculty advisor to determine which classes can substitute into the "bins." Once approved, a student can apply to another college as a non-degree seeking student, complete the course(s) it offers, and have the official transcript sent to the University of Idaho to be put on their MNR transcript.
Is it hard to find on-line courses?
Colleges and universities are adding new Web courses all the time, in response to increasing demand.
To see the on-line courses offered from the UI's College of Natural Resources, click here. Many more are offered throughout the world. A list of online natural resource courses offered in the United States may be found here. A list of online natural resource courses offered in England and Canada may be found here. (Due to the changing nature of classes being offered, these lists may be out-of-date).
I don't see the exact classes offered at the other colleges, now what?
Similar classes can be substituted into the program. A student works with a faculty advisor to determine which classes will enable a student to reach their goal. Although the MNR Guidebook lists policies and procedures that are "set in stone" and must be followed by each student, the choice of class substitutions is up to the MNR committee, which makes these substitutions on a case-by-case basis.
What does it cost to take classes from the University of Idaho?
The cost to take classes from the University of Idaho varies, depending on whether you are a full-time or part-time student.
Also, many courses meeting MNR requirements that distance education students can register for at the UI are online courses, which are labelled in the UI Class Schedule as "World-Wide-Web" or "WWW;" these specifically designated courses are offered at a special online (resident, in-state) rate.
However, not all courses taken by distance education students are online ones; those not listed in the UI Class Schedule as such -- e.g., 501 (DS), 502 (Sem./Colloquium), 599 (Non-research Thesis) -- are not, and have fees based on non-resident status.
Costs to attend UI can be found here: http://www.students.uidaho.edu/default.aspx?pid=99619
Graduate students pay full-time fees when they take 8 credits or more.
A $35 per credit Web fee is charged for on-line courses for either part-time or full-time students.
On-line course fees are quite reasonable at the University of Idaho; do I pay the same at the other colleges?
The University of Idaho does not charge out-of-state tuition for its on-line courses; note, however, that these courses are only those designated in the UI Class Schedule as "World-Wide-Web" or "WWW."
Most colleges and universities do charge out-of-state tuition for them. When a student enrolls as a non-degree seeking student at another college, the students pays the amount that college charges for that class.
