Welcome to the University of Idaho's Department of Conservation Social Sciences
Conservation is a social endeavor: initiated by people, designed by people, and intended to influence human behavior to achieve a broad array of environmental and natural resource management goals. The Conservation Social Sciences (CSS) Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in the social dimensions of conservation and environmental issues facing the world today.
Students explore social science theory and practice, with a particular focus on our strength areas:
- Parks, Protected Areas, and Wilderness Conservation;
- Environmental Communications (Education, Interpretation, and Communication);
- Conservation Planning and Policy, and
- Conservation Leadership.
Students focus on topics ranging from local community conservation issues to global environmental challenges in the public and private sector. The program fosters interdisciplinary perspectives from psychology, sociology, political science, economics, geography, law, philosophy, ethics, and natural resources to better understand the dynamics of human and social behavior in conservation at all levels.
